Why I Send People to Hack The Box Once They're Ready
This post includes an affiliate link. If you sign up through it, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only recommend things I'd point my own mentees toward.
If TryHackMe is where I send people to learn the fundamentals, Hack The Box is where I send them once they're ready to actually get their hands dirty. It's less hand holding, more sink or swim, and that's exactly the point. (Trust me I learned from experience)
What's actually on the platform
HTB Labs gives you Machines (full vulnerable virtual boxes you exploit end to end), standalone Challenges for sharpening a single skill without committing to a whole box, Pro Labs (enclosed simulated corporate networks for practicing chained, realistic attacks), and Fortresses.
HTB Academy sits alongside it as the structured learning path side, for anyone who wants guided modules instead of jumping straight into an unguided box.
Free versus paid, honestly
The free tier gets you the current week's rotating active machines and challenges, but you're on a shared VPN server, meaning someone else can reset your box mid exploit, and you can't touch retired machines at all. Retired machines matter because that's where the official write ups and community walkthroughs live, which is how most people actually learn when they get stuck.
The paid VIP+ tier runs somewhere around 25 dollars a month, less if you commit annually, and unlocks the full machine library, retired content, write ups, and a private lab instance so nobody resets your progress out from under you. For anyone serious about OSCP, CPTS, or just building a real portfolio of solved boxes, that access is worth the price of admission.
Who this is actually for
Not a total beginner's first stop. HTB Labs assumes you already have some fundamentals under your belt, TryHackMe or otherwise, and drops you into scattered, text heavy, unguided environments on purpose. If you want that discomfort because it's how you actually get good at this, that's exactly what makes it worth it.
